Summer gatherings · With alcohol

Watermelon Margarita Punch recipe.

Blanco tequila and fresh lime turn watermelon juice into a margarita-style party punch. There is no orange liqueur in this version: ripe watermelon supplies fruit sweetness, and soda water makes it a longer drink. The measured lime juice is part of the recipe, not just garnish.

Mix it well

How to make it

  1. Strain and measure the watermelon

Blend watermelon flesh without rind, then strain out seeds and excess pulp. Measure the finished juice. A smooth base is easier to pour and less likely to collect at the bottom.

  2. Balance the still base

Combine the watermelon juice, measured blanco tequila and freshly squeezed lime juice. Stir and chill. Taste a small portion: less ripe watermelon will make a tarter drink.

  3. Top with soda water

Just before serving, fold in chilled soda water. Add mint sprigs and lime wheels to glasses and pour the punch over ice rather than leaving ice to melt in the full batch.

Serving notes

Use fresh lime juice rather than sweetened lime cordial. The displayed strength assumes 40% blanco tequila; flavored or higher-proof tequila changes the flavor and estimate.

Make ahead

Refrigerate the strained watermelon, tequila and lime base in a covered pitcher. Stir any settled juice before adding soda, then garnish the individual glasses.
